Thirty years ago, a group of Hawaii-based runners created a trail running club, named the Hawaii Ultra Running Team (HURT). The eclectic band of runners would train together on Maui’s steep, jungle-covered mountains and then travel to the mainland to compete in ultras.

In 2001, they decided to create an ultra of their own. And so the HURT 100 was born. Today, HURT  is known one of the country’s toughest 100 milers, with a technical, root-strewn course and famously humid temperatures that routinely stymie almost half of those who start.

It’s also one of the more popular races in the country, attracting a deep field of runners each year, from all over the globe.

With his new film, the HURT 100 Film, HURT-veteran Matt Stevenson is aiming to capture the  ‘ohana-or, family-that has formed the core of the HURT 100 since it’s inception 17 years ago. Stevenson and his crew will begin filming in full this summer.
