A preview of a film that explores "the why" of running 100 miles in the mountains - a number that has been growing exponentially since it was first shown to be possible in the late 1970s. Filmmaker Billy Yang uses his own journey at the Leadville 100, one of the original 100-mile races in the country to explore why we seek the pain and discomfort of running these distances.

I usually don't race with a camera. But I brought one along for this 50 mile race at altitude to treat it even more like a training run for the upcoming Leadville 100 mile race on August 19th. In short, try to enjoy this race and have a little fun in the process. However things took a turn for the worse when shortly after the halfway mark, legs wouldn't respond and I allowed myself to get really low and dejected. Thanks to some good people around me, I rallied back and was able to finish on a day when things got a little ugly. Much love to my running community! Episode 8 is dedicated to my day at the 2017 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. After spending the past 3 years working on special projects surrounding this race, it was nice to be able to travel where I wanted, when I wanted and spectate/document without pressure to follow any one (or more) particular runner. Major props to the amazing women that battled in the intense heat and to Jim Walmsley for taking a swing at doing something potentially unprecedented and amazing. I know he will be back. "You really have to embrace the unknown. You can try all you want to script it - how you see the day going and have these plans. But the mountains don't care. They're indifferent to whatever plans, whatever hopes you have..." The 2016 Hardrock 100 was supposed to be a redemption race. In 2014, The North Face athlete Timothy Olson hit a figurative brick wall halfway through The Hardrock and was reduced to lying on the ground, sick and unable to continue for awhile. He eventually finished but wanted to prove to himself he could do better. He got that opportunity in 2016 when he was selected to run the race again. Unfortunately for Timothy, deja vu would rear its ugly head and a similar fate awaited him at the Hardrock... ____________________ © Billy Yang Films, 2017

In episode seven of The Window Seat, my travels took me to Utah - both Salt Lake City and the Park City/Kamas area. Most of the days were filled with long 15-17 hour production/work days but once we wrapped, I extended the trip another day to make sure I got in some proper mountain time in the Wasatch. With the Leadville 100 miler looming, I had to seize the opportunity to train high and relish in the beauty of these magnificent peaks. Every year, I release a film that looks back on the year. This year speaks closer to my general outlook and approach to life. I entitled it "The One Thing" - and it's as true a thing as I can state about who I am and strive to be on a daily basis. It may seem saccharine to some, but I hope the overall message of the piece is received. Thank you for watching and may 2017 be your best year yet. ________________ www.billyyangfilms.com ©Billy Yang Films 2017

Thanks to the good folks at China Mountain Trails, on September 10, 2016 I was given a tremendous opportunity to run a race in the Gobi Desert called the Devil's Ridge 70K. While grossly undertrained and already tired from a long European trip the week before, this was too good an opportunity to pass up and of course, document. Here is the travel leading up to it and the incredible race and production of the Devil's Ridge 70K as told from my POV. It was a rough one out there but stunning the entire time. One for the bucket list for sure! __________________ http://www.cnmtntrails.com/ Instagram: @chinamountaintrails Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chinamountaintrails/ © Billy Yang Films 2016

On July 15, 2016 ultrarunner and The North Face athlete Timothy Olson embarked on his 2nd go of the beautiful and challenging Hardrock 100 Mile Race. Arguably one of the toughest 100 milers in the country if not the world - Olson sought out to redeem his 2014 race when he suffered from breathing and stomach issues by preparing smarter and harder. In the end, the mystery and the unknown of the massive San Juan Mountains in Silverton, Colorado may be his undoing... _____________________ Timothy Allen Olson http://www.timothyallenolson.com/ Twitter: @timmyolson_run Instagram: @timothyallenolson © Billy Yang Films, 2016

On August 28, 2015 a small team of Nike athletes went overseas to Chamonix, France to compete in some of the biggest ultra endurance events in the world. The UTMB® (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) is a 170 km/105 mile race circumventing the Alps, crossing into 3 countries with over 33,000 ft of elevation gain. The CCC® (Chamonix-Courmayeur-Champex) is a 101 km race starting in Courmayeur, Italy and also finishing in Chamonix, France. This race has over 20,000 ft of positive elevation change. Both events are considering one of the toughest at its respective distances. American men have not typically fared well there. As such, Nike athletes David Laney (UTMB), Tim Tollefson (CCC) and Zach Miller (CCC) set out to prove that American men can compete and compete well in the imposing European mountains. Arguably the greatest American ultrarunner of all time, Ann Trason won an unprecedented 14 times at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run while winning and setting course records at many other ultra races. But instead of embracing her incredible feats, particularly in the 80-90's, a naturally introverted and modest Ann prefers to discuss the joy she feels on the trails and "competing with herself" versus those that toed the line with her. In this 3rd edition of "15 Hours" we follow the great Ann Trason on a day spent camping in the mountains of Bishop hiking in the High Sierras along with her dog. She opens up and shares her thoughts about her competitive years, why she shies away from the spotlight, her love of Western States and her thoughts on her portrayal in the best selling book "Born to Run". ___________ Filmed by: Billy Yang Twitter: @BillyYang Instagram: @BillyYangFilms Facebook: Facebook.com/BillyYangFilms billyyangfilms.com
