At the intersection of where intent meets action, I am both equally scared and excited to announce that my next 100 mile race will take me back to where it all started: the Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run. After several years in the sport of ultrarunning, I finally decided to pull the trigger on my first 100 back in 2014 - a sublime day filled with excitement and tears as I crossed the finish line in 24 hours 00 minutes and 20 seconds, narrowly missing the coveted sub-24 hour silver buckle. So it goes. This year, I head back - not to try to rewrite history. No, merely to put forth a spring/summer of honest blood/sweat equity and toe the line come August 3, 2019 ready to do my best in the mountains. As I like to say: here goes everything. Excited for the journey! On May 23, 2015, the unimaginable happened to Altra Running and CamelBak athlete Dave Mackey on a routine training run. At the summit of Bear Peak, a giant boulder became dislodged sending Mackey tumbling down the mountain before it also landed on him crushing his left leg. After a series of unsuccessful surgeries over the next year plus to get back to normal, he and his family difficult decision to amputate. This is his story about perseverance and coming back from the injury to attempting to complete the Leadville Race Series to become the first ever leg amputee to call himself a "Leadman". __________ Directed by: Matt Trappe, Billy Yang Sponsors: Altra Running, Camelbak, Suffer Better If you would like to support my work, consider donating to my Patreon page at: https://www.patreon.com/BillyYang ______________ © Billy Yang Films, LLC + Nine Mind 2019 Twitter: @BillyYang Instagram: @BillyYangFilms Facebook: @BillyYangFilms http://www.billyyangfilms.com/

Trade shows aren't my favorite thing in the world but it's a great way to connect with like-minded people in the industry. Plus Austin, TX is a city I've wanted to visit for quite some time for its food, culture, etc. So with the support of Altra Footwear, my co-director and I flew out to premiere our film "Leadman: The Dave Mackey Story" about Altra and Camelbak athlete Dave Mackey at The Running Event - an annual running trade show in which we chronicle his unfortunate accident that ultimately led to the painful decision to amputate his leg. His journey back is highlighted by the Leadville 100 and the overall Leadman Series. The Running Event was overall a great experience where you get to rub shoulders with the rock stars of our sport like Meb, Desi, Jurek and countless others. Why do we run 100 miles? It's a question I get from friends and acquaintances quite often. And in the lower moments during these ultramarathon events if I'm honest, a question I direct inward too. Sure, on the surface you can cite self-improvement, challenging yourself, so on and so forth. But the longer I do this, the more I started to explore answers beyond the surface. How we relate to discomfort, uncertainty and pain. Do we have it too easy and thus, we're drawn to the opposite end of the spectrum where we're reduced to "survival" mode and drinking/eating/moving forward? Are we in our more natural state when this is what our world is reduced down to? Using the historic and legendary Leadville 100 Mile Race as my backdrop and with the support of GU Energy Labs, I explore these ideas as I ran my 3rd 100-mile race at the "Race Across the Sky". Through the good, bad and the ugly - I attempted to unpack "the why" in running a 100 miles. My thanks again to them for the support! ________________ Directed by: Billy Yang Cinematography by: Derrick Lytle Produced by: Brian Gillis, Celia Santi Cover Photo: Colin Cooley http://www.billyyangfilms.com/
